CATEGORIES AND CRITERIA
2024 Volta DJ Awards Categories and Criteria/definitions. (All categories, except honorary section, are open for entries via filling of nomination forms)

1. ZONAL DJ OF THE YEARThe Zone DJ is the DJ adjudged by the board/Academy and the public as the best DJ in the zone with highest audience appeal, event organizers and general population in their zone. The DJ must play significant shows in that zone. And must be known of playing 35% of songs from the region.
i. Southern Zone: Dzodze, Aflao, Anloga, Keta, Sogakpoe, Akatsi and it surrounding.
ii. Central Zone: Ho, Joupong, Tsito, Kpedze, Kpeve, Kpetoe, Amedzofe, Peki and it surrounding.
iii. Northern Zone: Kpando, Hohoe, Vakpo, Have, Anfoega, Jasikan, Alavanyo and it's surrounding
2. GOSPEL DJ OF THE YEARThe Gospel DJ of the Year will be awarded to the DJ adjudged by the public and the board/academy as the DJ who promote the Gospel music exceptionally on radio or on their platforms playing at least 40% local gospel music on their platforms for the year under review.
3. TRADITIONAL DJ OF THE YEARThe traditional DJ of the Year will be presented to a DJ who played and promoted 80% or more traditional songs during his or her shows either on radio or his platforms and is adjudged by the public and the board/academy as the best traditional DJ for the year under review.
4. HIPLIFE / AFROBEAT DJ OF THE YEARThe Hiplife/Afrobeat DJ of the Year will be presented to a DJ who played and promoted 80% or more local hiplife/Afrobeat music during his or her shows either on radio or club/pub and is adjudged by the public and the board/academy as the best Hiplife/Afrobeat DJ for the year under review.
5. REGGAE/DANCEHALL DJ OF THE YEARThe reggae dancehall DJ of the year award will be presented to Reggae DJ adjudged by the public and the board/academy based on creativity in music presentation and visibility. The DJ must also play some club/pub and event gigs although the club DJ must not necessarily be on radio.
6. HIPHOP DJ OF THE YEAR The Hiphop DJ of the Year will be presented to a DJ who played and promoted 80% or more Hiphop/drill songs during his or her shows either on radio, club or mixtape and is adjudged by the public and the board as the best hiphop DJ for the year under review.

7. DJ(S) POPULAR SONG OF THE YEARThis category will be voted for exclusively by club, mobile and radio DJs and they will choose which song the most popular among DJs and music fans in the region and beyond. The song’s influence should have been felt in the club on the radio and outdoors and should also be popular among the fans and enjoyed a high appeal and rotation during the year under review. Only songs made by Volta artistes are eligible.
8. MALE RADIO DJ OF THE YEARThe Best Male Radio DJ award goes to the DJ adjudged by the public and the jury as the best male DJ who owns a radio show based on his performance during the year under review. The DJ must play all genres of music including hiplife, highlife, reggae, pop, R&B, house music, Gospel etc. Must have high listenership and visibility.
9. FEMALE RADIO DJ OF THE YEARThe Best Female Radio DJ award goes to the DJ adjudged by the public and the jury as the best female DJ who owns a radio show based on her performance during the year under review. The DJ must play all genres of music including hiplife, highlife, reggae, pop, R&B, house music, Gospel etc. The DJ must have a high listenership and visibility.
10. STUDENT DJ OF THE YEARThe Best Student DJ award goes to the DJ adjudged by the public and the jury as the best student DJ for the year based on his or her performance during the year under review. The DJ must be a student, The DJ must as well played gigs on campus.
11. NIGHT CLUB / PUB DJ OF THE YEARThe Night Club/Pub DJ of the Year award goes to the DJ adjudged by the public and the jury as the best Night Club/Pub DJ for the year under review based on his/her performance during the year under review. The DJ must have high crowd appeal and known among club/pub goers. The DJ must play at least two times in a month in a recognized night club/pub.
12. PUB/NIGHTCLUB OF THE YEARThe Award is adjudged by the public and the board/Academy as the best Pub or Club during the year under review. The Pub/Club must have much better events a high crowed appeal in their audiences or club/pub goers in the Region.
13. DJ MIXTAPE OF THE YEARThe DJ Mixtape of the Year will be awarded to a DJ adjudged by the board as the DJ with the best audio mixtape based on creativity and public appeal released during the year under review. The mixtape must contain at least 40% Volta music and its presentation/submission should include a full artwork design and mixtape title or link.
14. RECORD PROMOTER OF THE YEARThe Record Promoter of the Year is adjudged by the Board as the most outstanding local music promoter on radio, pub or club in Ghana. The winner must be credited with heavily promoting, at least, one very popular song that became a hit during the year under review. The DJ must be known by the public and music artistes as an exceptional Volta music promoter who is influential on the Radio, Pub and Club
15. MOBILE/EVENT DJ OF THE YEARThis category will also be based on a video or submission of name events that the DJ has played. The adjudication will be based on the expert knowledge of the Jury and you must have been the DJ assigned to play for events, pubs/clubs and occasions in Volta and played alongside artistes’ performances and in between their Assigned DJs.
16. SCRATCH DJ OF THE YEARSubmissions to this category will be via video. The submissions will be for three (3) minutes edit of a performance. The performance can feature any genre of music. Nominees will be chosen by the jury based on their expertise and knowledge of Scratch DJing and the presentation on the video. To be eligible, you must be either a radio, bedroom DJ, battle, club or mobile DJ.
17. ARTISTE DJ OF THE YEARTo be eligible you must be an assigned Artiste DJ, you must work with a Volta artiste(s) and Ghana based artiste and must be the DJ during at least 80% of the artiste’s performances. All genres of music played are eligible. The Artiste DJ of the Year will be determined based on your performance, chemistry with the artiste during performances, artistry and the expert knowledge of the Jury.
18. DISCOVERY DJ OF THE YEARThe winner of this category will be chosen by the Jury based on their expert knowledge and their observations as the most promising DJ with a significant buzz during the year under review. The award will be presented to a relatively up-coming DJ in Volta with skills and public appeal. Participants in this category must have never been nominated for a DJ Discovery of the year award, should have at least a year’s experience working in clubs or radio and could be playing any genre of music.
19. DIASPORA DJ OF THE YEARThe Award goes to a Hard-working DJ from the region(Volta) but working outside the region who plays on the following platforms(events, clubs, pubs and radios) to entice his audience under the year of review.
20. MC OF THE YEAR The MC adjudged by the public and the jury as the best MC in the region during the year under review. The MC must be associated with events (Parties, Jams, Weddings etc) in the region. Must be known amongst DJs and the public as MC.
21. HYPEMAN OF THE YEARThe hypeman/woman will be adjudged by the public and the board/academy as the best hypeman/woman in the region during the year under review. The hypeman/woman must be associated with events (Parties, Jams, Weddings etc) in the region. Must be known amongst DJs and the public as hypeman.
22. DJ OF THE YEARThe Best DJ of the Year must be from Volta and have a regional appeal, crossed towns and cities and made the most impact in Volta during the year under review. The nominee in this category must have at least few experience working in clubs, mobile or events the year under review and must get at least 3 nominations in other categories.
23. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDThis award is a prestigious category involving the induction into the DJs Hall of Fame. This award goes to exceptional individuals and/or groups who are recognized as leaders of our industry. Induction is not limited to any one (1) candidate(s) per year. Inductees will receive an official Volta DJ Award inscribed with their name, and will be recognized with a synopsis of their history and contributions through a formal segment presented by selected peers and colleagues. To be eligible, the DJ must have never received a Lifetime Achievement award at Volta DJ Awards and must be from the region with at least ten years’ experience working in clubs, pubs, radios or has influenced the DJ culture in the region.
